Student Support Services

ARLANE Robinson Center for Student Success

The Student Success Center (SSC) offers a diverse menu of free services to help students achieve their academic goals. The SSC staff provides academic advisement for first term students, academic success coaching, workshops and oversight of TEAMS (TCSG’s Early Alert Management System). Visitors to the SSC can also obtain information on external resources related to financial literacy, local social services, and academic success tips.

SSC advisors support orientation and advisement services for all first time students. Included in this process are: overview of school policies and procedure, course selection, registration, and career planning. Staff serve as campus liaisons for Achieve Atlanta (community partner), Collegiate Leadership Academy (student organization), and several sponsored programs on campus.

Academic Success Center

The staff of the Academic Success Center (ASC) offers one-on-one, group, tutorial services in the general core areas. All tutorial services are free. In addition, the ASC serves as a location for students to work on completing their computerized modules for ENGL/MATH/READ 0090 or any general education course they may be taking that has a Blackboard component. It is equipped with free Wi-Fi and 32 internet-accessible computers.

Academic Success Center – Lab Rules

The following is a list of rules that apply to the ASC –Lab and Advisement Services:

• All students must sign in before entering the lab and sign out before exiting.
• This is a learning environment, therefore please respect others, work quietly, and raise your hand for assistance.
• Children are not allowed in the lab.
• Food and Beverages are prohibited in the lab.
• Computers are for academic purposes only.
• The use of cell phones is prohibited in the lab. Staff members reserve the right to ask anyone using a cell phone to go outside of the lab.
• Profanity or the disrespect of others will not be tolerated. Disruptive students will be asked to leave and security will be called to intervene in extreme or volatile cases.
• Students should arrive on time for tutoring appointments and in the event of a needed cancellation, call 404-225-4628
• Do not leave your personal property unattended. Staff members are not responsible for any lost or stolen property.
• Violating any of the above stated rules may result in being removed or banned from the lab and/or advisement area.

Career Services

Atlanta Technical College is committed to assisting program graduates in the pursuit of suitable, rewarding and purposeful employment. While the college cannot guarantee all students employment upon graduation or completion of personal objectives, instructors and the career services staff constantly seek to assist students with employment opportunities.

The Career Services staff conducts workshops on a semester basis for students to disseminate information on the availability, scope, and use of career service resources. These resources include, but are not limited to, current and projected employment opportunities, information on employers to ensure that students have the widest possible choices of employment. Career Services also provides information on the employment process, preparing job search competencies and tools for graduates to present themselves effectively as candidates for employment.

The Career Services staff provides assistance to the Department of Institutional Effectiveness in conducting semester follow-up surveys of graduates and their employers. The responses from these surveys ensure that Atlanta Technical College is achieving its educational objectives of providing students with the skills necessary to perform in a competitive workforce environment.

The Career Services Office maintains a web-based job-posting site, Optimal Resume, (www.atlantatech.optimalresume.com) that is accessible to Atlanta Technical College students and alumni. The site is equipped with software that allows Atlanta Technical College students and alumni to prepare their resumes, do video interviews and search for employment. Potential employers may register on the site upon acceptance from the career services staff.

Veteran's Affairs

The Atlanta Technical College’s Veteran Department is run by veterans for veterans and offers a one-stop shop that is easily accessible and widely available to service members, veterans, and dependents. Veteran Services goal is to empower service members, veterans, and dependents with the tools necessary for achieving their academic goals. Through information sharing, referral services, and outreach programs, Atlanta Technical College’s Veterans Department strives to provide a supportive and educational environment that fosters student success and achievement. Whether students are new or transferring, the team will help guide students to the resources needed to make the most of the Veteran Experience at ATC. The Veterans Affairs coordinator serves at the liaison and first stop for information for student veterans, and military dependents. Adult Education Department- Adult Literacy and Ged Prep

Who we serve:

Students 16 years and older Services offered:

• Adult Basic Education (ABE)-improving reading, writing and math skills.
• GED Preparation Classes-Preparing students to pass the GED.
• Dual Enrollment Programs-Offered to students who TABE test at a high enough level to be dually enrolled in a technical certificate program and Adult Ed to earn their GED and technical certification simultaneously.
• Transition Services- Assisting with transition to college, the workplace, or the military, including workforce development, financial and family support training, referrals for services, expungement and soft skills workshops.

Registration and Intake:

Applications are available for completion in the Academic Complex (Building C).

Prior to Beginning Classes:

Students will be required to take the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment and attend an Orientation TABE assessments determine:

• At which grade level the student is functioning
• In which class student will be placed
• How close a student is to GED attainment

TABE assessments also give instructors a tool that they can use to move student’s educational gains at progressive rates. Students will be administrated a locator test prior to being pre-tested to determine which level of the TABE is best suited for the individual student. State law mandates that students are pre-tested prior to 12 instructional hours and post-tested at every 30, 40 instructional hours depending on how well they score on the pre-test. Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Requirements for Program Enrollment:

• Every student must have a valid State ID
• Students ages 16 through 19 must have an official school withdrawal form evidencing withdrawal from public, private, or home school systems.
• Every student must be able to prove Verification of Eligibility for public benefits in the State of Georgia
• Underage Youth, (individuals who are 16 and 17 years of age), must be enrolled into the program by a parent, or guardian, or must show proof of court mandate for enrollment.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

• All GED® candidates must present a valid state or federal picture ID; i.e., passport, driver’s license.
• 16 and 17 year-olds will be referred to a state-approved adult education program. You may contact the Atlanta Technical College Adult Education Department for additional information; or 404.225.4433 or email adulted@atlantatech.edu.

What is the cost?

• The cost of the GED® Test is $40 for each individual module. There are four modules: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. TOTAL TEST BATTERY - $160.
• GEDReady™ (the Official GED Practice Test) is available for students to take and see if they are ready to take the official GED test. The cost of GEDReady™ is $6 each

What if I need preparation classes?

GED® preparation classes are offered at no cost through state-approved adult education programs. Atlanta Technical College is pleased to offer GED® preparation classes. Contact: 404.225.4433 or email adulted@atlantatech.edu.

What if I already started the GED® test and need to finish?

What is the new 2014 GED test? Effective January 2, 2014, GED testing Service launched the 2014 GED test. The Atlanta Technical College Early Childcare Center has earned accreditations from Quality Rated (State of GA), and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Parent Involvement

Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s education. The observation area is open for parents to observe, however, it must not conflict with the instructional environment. Parent involvement activities are offered each month. Parent-teacher conferences are an integral part of helping children achieve their best. Conferences are arranged on a scheduled basis or at the parent’s request.

Special Needs

The Early Education Center follows The Atlanta Public Schools Program under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Placement in appropriate special education program is determined by the child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and recommendations of the placement committee.

Education is a partnership between home and school. We value parent involvement at every level and encourage you to partner with us. In order for this partnership to be effective, we need to be able to communicate. Please feel free to call, write a note, or e-mail us if you have concerns or questions about your child’s education. We are always available to schedule a conference to discuss any issue or concern you have regarding your child.

Scholarships

The Atlanta Technical College Foundation (ATCF) awards a number of merit- and need-based scholarships to students enrolled in the college. The criterion for each scholarship is on the ATCF website at www.atlantatech.edu/about/scholarships. Students should consult the website often for updates. Announcements concerning the availability of scholarships are also sent to student emails through the official ATC student email system.

Scholarships include:

• Merancas Education Assistance Grants: The Merancas Education Assistance Grant is to provide students with immediate funding to meet unusual and unexpected expenses beyond the ordinary educational expenses met through financial aid.
• The Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation “4 for 4” Endowed Scholarship: The purpose of the scholarship fund is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue technical education.
• The Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation “4 for 4” Endowed Scholarship in honor of Alba and Thomas Tull: The purpose of the scholarship fund is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue a degree in Design and Media Technology.
• Atlanta Technical College BMW Student Scholarship: The BMW scholarship fund is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue an automotive technician career with BMW.
• The Brenda Watts Jones Memorial Foundation Student Scholarship: The Brenda Watts Jones Memorial Foundation Student Scholarship Fund is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue technical education in the following areas:

  Aircraft Maintenance, Emergency Medical Technician, Database Administrator, Practical Nursing, Pharmacy, Diesel Technology, Hotel Management, Graphic Designer, Health Information Technology, Firefighter, Paralegal, Plumber, Marketing Manager, Heating & Air Technician, Dental Assistant, Drafting, and Medical Assisting.

• Dr. Brenda Watts Jones Allied Health Scholarship: The purposed of this scholarship is to financially assist students who are enrolled in an allied health program. Programs include but are not limited to – Bioscience Technology, Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, Healthcare Science, Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology.
• The American Building Supply, Inc., Student Scholarship: The AMERICAN BUILDING SUPPLY, INC., (ABS) scholarship fund is to reward academic excellence and/or to financially assist qualified/technical degree candidates enrolled in the Carpentry Program.
• The Steve and Charlotte Howard HVAC Scholarship: The Steve and Charlotte Howard HVAC Scholarship rewards academic excellence and encourages students to pursue the Air Conditioning Technology Diploma program.
• Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management Student Scholarship Fund: The Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management Student Scholarship Fund is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue technical education in the Hotel/Tourism Management Program.
• The W.W. Grainger, Inc. Student Scholarship Fund: The W. W. Grainger, Inc., scholarship fund is to reward academic excellence and/or to financially assist qualified vocational/technical degree candidates in the Industrial and Transportation Technologies in the pursuit of their degree or certification.
• The Bryant A. Lee Memorial Scholarship: The purpose of the scholarship is to reward academic excellence and encourage students to pursue an automotive career in technology.
