Electrical Lineworker- TCC

Program Description

The Electrical Lineworker certificate program provides students with the necessary knowledge and skill to gain employment as an entry-level lineworker with electrical utility companies, both public and private. Topics include lineworker organization principles, lineworker workplace skills, lineworker automations skills, and lineworker occupational skills.

Occupational Trends

Although occupational trends have stabilized for the past several years, the industry, however, is expected to improve at a rate of about 1.2% per year. With the increase in new construction, remodeling, and replacement of old technology with new, the demand for qualified lineworkers is expected to show improvement by 2016-2018 The industry is expected to grow at approximately 12% or more by 2018 due to increased power usage. This increased usage may be due to growth in population and construction. The employment growth is also expected to increase from 53, 368 to approximately 61,900 jobs by 2018.

Job/Career Description

The electrical lineworker may be employed by public or private companies to install, service, maintain, and repair electrical utilities for homes, businesses, and industries. The lineworker profession is specific to those employees who service the generation and distribution of electrical power from the electrical utility company to the residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Responsibilities would include installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing local, long-distance, and rural electric power cables and communication lines, erect and construct pole and tower lines, and install underground lines and cables.

Admissions Requirements

Must be 16 years of age
Completion of high school diploma or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply
Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math
Transfer of previous post-secondary credits will be determined by the Office of Enrollment Services

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements

Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete all required courses to graduate.
