Program Description
The Phlebotomy Technician program trains students to become proficient in various blood collecting techniques, effective patient interaction, and language used in the medical and clinical laboratory field. The student attains an understanding of normal body structure and function, which serves as a basis for understanding conditions of infirmity and also the basic principles of law as it relates to the health care occupation. Furthermore, this program enables you to sit for national certification with The American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician PBT (ASCP)CM Occupational Trends: Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system including but not limited to hospitals, public health clinics, private medical offices, medical research centers and Veterans’ facilities. The clinical practicum is in a hospital clinical laboratory, outpatient / ambulatory care setting and/or physician offices. Blood and Airborne Pathogens
Students enrolled in Category I and II programs at Atlanta Technical College will be performing tasks in which there is a normal occurrence for exposure to blood, other potentially infectious body materials, and airborne pathogens.
These tasks will be performed in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities for each occupational training program/course. Students will be required to present documentation of Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis immunizations as a result of potential occupational exposure. Students should contact their program directors for more information.
