Arts and Sciences Division
The mission of the Arts and Sciences Division is to develop the core academic competencies necessary for student success in the College‘s programs, in the global workplace, and beyond. Critical thinking should be considered the most important skill that students develop. This division consists of General Education, First Year Experience, Learning Support, and the Academic Success Center.
General Education
The General Education Department provides quality instruction to facilitate student success. The department develops core academic and professional skills. When students graduate from a diploma, certificate, or associate degree program, they will demonstrate competencies in the following areas: research, writing, reading, oral communications, mathematics, and social/behavioral science.
The Co-Requisite Model
The Co-requisite model is an evidence and research-based approach to student success and remediation. With Co-requisite Support, students enroll directly into college-level courses and receive academic support alongside their regular classes. Rather than facing a long sequence of prerequisite, non-credit courses, students get up to speed while working toward their degree.

Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides free and holistic tutorial support services. Tutors are trained in the Socratic tutoring method through AVID and offer tutorial services in Mathematics, English, Reading, and basic Microsoft Office. Located in room C2118, the Academic Success Center provides an open study area, face-to-face tutorial, Internet access, and various tutorial computer software. The Academic Success Center's operating hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:00am-8:00pm, Friday, 8:00am-12:30pm, and Saturday, 9:00am-1:00pm. You may call the center at 404.225.4636.
Fresh Start
Fresh Start is an opportunity for potential Atlanta Technical College students to receive a free refresher course offered by the Adult Education division. Eligible students are those who have been accepted but not yet enrolled in a credit-bearing program at Atlanta Technical College, and whose placement test scores fall below the level of Learning Support or the Co-Requisite model. The goal is to provide a refresher program that will give students the basic skills needed to be successful in credit-bearing courses.
Learning Support
Learning Support (LS) provides lecture and computer based instruction designed to fulfill the basic academic needs of program entry. If a student‘s placement test scores or transcripts indicate a weakness in Writing, Reading, Numerical Skills, or Algebra, the student will enroll in Learning Support (LS) courses. The goal of these courses is to enhance a student’s ability to succeed in college-level courses.
First Year Experience
The First Year Experience is a student success course designed to transition, connect, and acclimate new students to Atlanta Technical College. The course creates an awareness of various campus resources and holistic skill sets necessary to achieve educational and career success. Through the nurturing of academic, personal, social, occupational, and technological talents, students develop the academic and professional skills necessary to be successful in college and the global community.
Interdisciplinary Studies Degree
The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) allows customization of the program of study based on each student’s academic and professional goals. The AIS requires completion of 64 semester credit hours (24 hours of general education requirements and 40 hours distributed among one or more areas of emphasis). Areas of concentration include education, public safety, business and computer/information technology, industrial/engineering technology, and health sciences. The program curriculum may be strategically selected to build upon the student’s goals and objectives. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition or continued education. A student might choose an interdisciplinary studies program if his or her specific goals and interests cannot be met through a school’s existing majors, minors and electives.
Early College Essentials
This Technical Certificate of Credit is designed for a cooperative agreement between technical colleges and four-year colleges/universities in the area. These students have been identified as capable of performing academically at the college level and some are disengaged at the high school and are at risk of dropping out.
Learning Support Courses
General Core Requirements
The General Education department emphasizes college level writing, communication, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and mathematics. All of these disciplines are required for the various certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees offered at Atlanta Technical College. This department assists students in attaining the skills, knowledge, perspectives, values, and dispositions that will enable them to apply their skills beyond the classroom in order to become valuable citizens and successful workers.
