Computer Hardware Specialist- TCC

Program Description

The Computer Hardware Specialist technical certificate of credit is designed to enhance skills for students in the PC support field. The program builds on the student's computer knowledge and existing skill base. The student's skill base is enhanced with hands-on lab work incorporated in courses on operating systems, hardware maintenance, and networking.

Occupational Trends

As long as there are computers, there will be someone needed to assemble, install, and repair them. Employment is expected to increase 14% by 2018, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will be fastest in the industries which rely heavily on technology. Job prospects are expected to be good; those who possess a bachelor's degree, relevant technical and communication skills, and previous work experience should have even better opportunities than applicants with an associate degree or professional certification.

Education Programs

Computer Hardware Specialist requires minimal formal education for certification. Many technical colleges and community colleges offer this entry-level program. Computer repair companies also have training programs. For job advancement, additional IT certification in Microsoft Certified Professional or Cisco Certified Administrator would be beneficial.

Job/Career Description

Provide simple maintenance on computer hardware components. Job titles could include Computer Installation Technician, Computer Hardware Repair Technician, Computer Maintenance Specialist. Typical places of employment are banks, call centers, hospitals, and school systems.

Admissions Requirements

Must be 16 years of age
Completion of high school diploma or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply
Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math
Transfer of previous post-secondary credits will be determined by the Office of Enrollment Services

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements

Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete all required courses to graduate.
