Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) TCC

Program Description (Major Code: EMH1)

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) TCC Program prepares students to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight and are a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Mission:

The mission of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician TCC Program is to provide a sequence of courses that prepare qualified individuals to enter the profession with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for professional entry-level competence and continued growth throughout their careers. By integrating academics and applied career preparation, this program will produce competent entry-level AEMT’s in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The program will offer learning opportunities for students to develop the professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The programs curriculum will emphasize a combination of the didactic, skills laboratory, and clinical instruction to provide a learning structure to fulfill the expected student outcomes, program goals, accreditation requirements, and community needs.

Admissions Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Completion of high school diploma or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply
  • Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math
  • Transfer of previous post-secondary credits will be determined by the Office of Enrollment Services
  • Criminal background checks and drug screens will be required based on the requirements for participation in clinical courses, certification examinations or licensing procedures.
  • Student must be either a Georgia licensed EMT or Nationally Registered EMT to enroll in the AEMT TCC. EMT-Basic not accepted
  • Students with NREMT® certification or licensure as an EMT may enter the program during the AEMT portion of the class (EMSP1510). Proof of Licensure or Certification must be provided before enrollment (NREMT® certification accepted).

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete all required courses to graduate.

Advanced Placement: Advanced placements will not be allowed, however, with permission from the Office of Enrollment Services transfer of credits for general educations courses only are allowed to be accepted into the EMS Professions Diploma program and all EMT or AEMT courses have to be completed within the program to verify and validate that the student met the requirements of the NREMT, State office of EMS, TCSG, CoAEMSP, etc.

Licensure and Certification: Successful completion of the program allows the graduate to take the National Registry of Emergency

Medical Technicians (NREMT®) Advanced Emergency Medical Technician’s (AEMT) certification examination and apply for Georgia licensure with the Department of Public Health- Office of Emergency Medical Service and Trauma (OEMST) as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

Blood and Airborne Pathogens: Students enrolled in Category I and II programs at Atlanta Technical College will be performing tasks in which there is a normal occurrence for exposure to blood, other potentially infectious body materials, and airborne pathogens.

These tasks will be performed in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities for each occupational training program/course.

Students will be required to present documentation of Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis immunizations as a result of potential occupational exposure. Students should contact their program directors for more information on policies and procedures regarding blood and airborne pathogens.
