Paramedicine AAS

Program Description (Major Code: PT13)

The program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills from the EMT-I 1985/AEMT levels to the Paramedic level. Successful completion of the program allows the graduate to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) ® Paramedic certification examination and apply for licensure with the Georgia Department of Public Health - Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma as a Paramedic.

Mission:

The mission of the Paramedicine Associate of Applied Science Degree is to provide a sequence of courses that prepare qualified individuals to enter the Paramedic profession with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for professional entry-level competence and continued growth throughout their careers. By integrating academics and applied career preparation, this program will produce competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The program will offer learning opportunities for students to develop the professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The programs curriculum will emphasize a combination of the didactic, skills laboratory, and clinical instruction to provide a learning structure to fulfill the expected student outcomes, program goals, accreditation requirements, and community needs.

Admissions Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Completion of high school diploma or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply.
  • Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math.
  • Transfer of previous post-secondary credits will be determined by the Office of Enrollment Services
  • AEMT license or NREMT® certification required.
  • Criminal background checks and drug screens will be required based on the requirements for participation in clinical courses.

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average in each course and complete all required courses to graduate.

Advanced Placement: Advanced placements will not be allowed, however, with permission from the Office of Enrollment Services, transfer of credits for general educations courses only are allowed to be accepted into the Paramedic program and all Paramedic courses have to be completed within the program to verify and validate that the student met the requirements of the NREMT, State office of EMS, TCSG, CoAEMSP, etc.

*** Graduates of the TCSG Paramedic Technology Diploma Program may enroll in the Paramedicine AAS but will be required to demonstrate appropriate Degree level Accuplacer, COMPASS, SAT, or ACT scores in Math, Reading and English.***

Blood and Airborne Pathogens: Students enrolled in Category I and II programs at Atlanta Technical College will be performing tasks in which there is a normal occurrence for exposure to blood, other potentially infectious body materials, and airborne pathogens. These tasks will be performed in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities for each occupational training program/course. Students will be required to present documentation of Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis immunizations as a result of potential occupational exposure. Students should contact their program directors for more information on policies and procedures regarding blood and airborne pathogens.
