Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) TCC

Program Description (Major Code: EMJ1)

The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene of an emergency to the health care system. Successful completion of the EMT TCC program will prepare the graduate to deliver basic emergency medical care and transportation during critical and emergency medical situations.

Mission

The mission of the Emergency Medical Technician TCC Program is to provide a sequence of courses that prepare qualified individuals to enter the profession with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for professional entry-level competence and continued growth throughout their careers. By integrating academics and applied career preparation, this program will produce competent entry-level EMT’s in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The program will offer learning opportunities for students to develop the professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The programs curriculum will emphasize a combination of the didactic, skills laboratory, and clinical instruction to provide a learning structure to fulfill the expected student outcomes, program goals, accreditation requirements, and community needs.

Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the EMT Certification exam administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) ® and apply for licensure with the Department of Public Health-State Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma 1680 Phoenix Boulevard, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30349, (http://dph.georgia.gov/EMS).

Admissions Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Completion of high school diploma or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply
  • Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math
  • Transfer of previous post-secondary credits will be determined by the Office of Enrollment Services
  • Criminal background checks and drug screens will be required based on the requirements for participation in clinical courses, certification examinations or licensing procedures.

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete all required courses to graduate.

Blood and Airborne Pathogens: Students enrolled in Category I and II programs at Atlanta Technical College will be performing tasks in which there is a normal occurrence for exposure to blood, other potentially infectious body materials, and airborne pathogens.

These tasks will be performed in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities for each occupational training program/course. Students will be required to present documentation of Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis immunizations as a result of potential occupational exposure.
